Welcome back to SCOUTS-L. A few years ago, "Scouting" magazine had an
article about the 1000th boy to earn the Hornaday award for conservation.
This young man joined Scouting at age 16 when he read a question in a
college application that read, "Were you a Boy Scout? If so, are you an
Eagle Scout?"
He said, "I hate to answer 'No' to questions like that. He joined the BSA
and earned the rank of Eagle Scout in slightly less than 2 years, whilst
earning slightly over 100 merit badges in the process. During this period
of time, he was also a varsity letterman in three sports, including
being elected as Captain of his high school football team.
I once had a German exchange student who joined the BSA at age 16. He
left at the end of the year for Germany with all 24 merit badges for
Eagle Scout completed. At that time, 24 merit badges were required for
the rank of Eagle Scout. He left as a Star Scout, and we had a board of
review for him in absentia and confirmed him in the rank of Life Scout.
All he needed to earn Eagle Scout was to do an Eagle service project and
serve actively as a Scout for 6 months.
Alas, BSA regulations prohibited him from continuing in the BSA in his
own country. Thus, I think of him as an Eagle Scout who should have been,
but was not, through no fault of his own.
Major Frank Albrecht is now a career army officer in the German Bundeswehr.
I trust this response will be of some assistance to you.
Yours in Scouting,
Rodger
