Cub Camping

I've been reading this thread with interest. I'm in the process of
developing Cub Scout Resident Camp in our Council. This year I am
expecting 150 Cub Scouts and Webelos Scouts with their parents over the
course of 3 weekend sessions. I just came back from Akela's World in
Tesomas where they are have 1200 Cub Scouts and Webelos Scouts registered
for 12 sessions. (Whew!! I'm jealous, I'm awed, I'm motivated!!!)

While up at Tesomas, I participated in 6 Tenderfoot BOR. I asked each
candidate the following: What is the difference between Cub Scouts and Boy
Scouts. Each boy answered: Boy Scouts is much more fun, you get to do so
much more, you get to go camping. The expectation of most boys as they
enter Cub Scouting is that they will get to go camping.

If I'm not mistaken, approximately 2/3's of the boys we serve are Cub
Scouts and 1/3 are Boy Scouts. This discrepancy suggests to me that we are
losing a bunch of boys between Cub Scouts and Boy Scouting. Could it be
that they are leaving because they are not camping???

Yours in Scouting,
Jean Petersen
