Jon,
I have been a SCOUTS-L reader since 1990 or 1991. I usually lurk, but
occasionally post something. That happens when a topic "pushes my
button" or when I have a problem and need help.
The latest time has been this last week with my Philmont trip. Numerous
people on SCOUTS-L responded with helpful suggestions, both directly to
me and to the list. I am not surprised, since that has been my
experience before.
I have enjoyed the chance to meet several people on SCOUTS-L in the
flesh. I got to attend the SCOUTS-L gathering at the 1993 National
Jamboree. The group there was as nice and helpful in person as they are
on the list. However, their faces didn't always go with my mental
pictures. Last summer I took a group of Scouts to Sommers Canoe Base
(which I highly recommend, BTW). Todd Tingblad took the trouble to come
meet our group at Fred Andersen Scout Camp and brought CSPs for all the
crew.
It was SCOUTS-L that encouraged me to go to Wood Badge, and now I used
to be an owl, and a good old owl, too. SR-81 and the two years of
working my ticket that followed were a wonderful growing experience, as
well as a challenging one.
This list has also added tremendously to my knowledge of Scouting around
the world. I know that the non-BSA members of this list often feel that
they are drowned out by the BSA specific stuff that dominates our
discussions. To my Scouting and Guiding brothers and sisters around the
world, I say "keep on posting." The same goes for the GSUSA leaders.
You have help me broaden my perspective. It has been exciting to me to
be able to respond to a message from someone in Australia and get a
reply within hours.
Jon, thanks so much for keeping down the flame wars and so on that
plague other lists. Yes, occasionally someone on the list gets his or
her feelings hurt. Usually, it turns out to be unintentional and a
misunderstanding. I am a list owner myself, though of smaller lists,
and I have some idea how much work it can be.
