Dear Jon,

I have only been on the Scouts-L list for a couple of months but have
found it to be a thought provoking and thoroughly interesting forum. In
my experience, we Scouters do not come together often enough and
can become isolated in our own units. This can lead to a waning of the
enthusiasm of Scouters which in turn is reflected in poor programs for
the youth who then leave in droves which leads to more waning of
enthusiasm, poorer programs and yet more youth leaving. The
downward spiral is difficult to stop once it has picked up momentum and
so the best way to stop this must be to keep scouters enthused with all
the good that Scouting can offer.

This is where Scouts-L comes in Jon, it offers the chance for Scouters
(and others in service to youth) to feel a part of a family, to sit and chat
(or just listen) to others who share a common interest. A chance to share
the wealth of experience from others whether they be from around the
corner or on the other side of the planet. This is somewhere we can come
to find answers to our questions and questions for our answers. No-one
can be expected to know everything but collectively we are a great resource
and offer a wealth of knowledge and experience to all-comers.

When you do something good it lives for all time, the example you set lives
with the people who benefit from your good deed, these people pass it on
through good deeds of their own and so continues this upward spiral.

What you do here Jon is a good deed of truly global proportions. You will
probably never meet most of those who benefit from Scouts-L and you will
probably never know those who benefit from them but the far reaching effects
of this forum is a wonderful and admirable thing.

I thank you Jon for the opportunity to be a part of this list and I thank
also
the great number of people who give freely of their time to contribute their
invaluable experience and advice for the benefit of others in this great
movement of ours.

Yours, in the brotherhood of scouting,

Kevin Thomson
