It's tha same here in Canada as in Aus. I take my pack out camping
three to four times a year. Winter camps must be in heated cabins for
our Cub age youth however. Winter here is too severe for those little
bodies. So that would be from the end of October until April. We go
out in tents for the rest of the year.
I keep hearing the argument from the BSA crowd that taking the young
ones out camping will ruin it for scouts. It doesn't hold water here,
mate. They love it and they only want more.
Our Beavers go too, but we tend to keep it a family or parent / Beaver
camp. I like having the beavers along on the Pack camps late inthe
spring. It gives them a taste of whats ahead. We have link camps with
all of the sections at some time during the year.
The only thing I find with cubs is that it takes a heck of a lot more
planning, organizing and a lot more energy from the leaders. I'm always
exausted after a cub camp.
I do troop now, and those camps are much easier to plan and implament.
They are a whole lot easier on us leaders.
On reflection...the cubs are always go, go, go ..."what's next"!!! The
Troop is always..."when can we take a rest"...I'm tired...do we have
to...it's not my turn...! They want lots more free time and the energy
level drops off very quickly. I never have to tell them when to go to
bed or when to quiet down. Cubs on the other hand can keep going all
night...the first night anyway.
