I agree with Patrick, if the cubs have some experience camping then they
are further ahead when they get to Scouts. This year my troop doubled in
size because of the cubs who came up. If I had to start from the begining
with them I would have lost all of the 2nd and 3rd year boys. I have very
few leaders so the fact that the new scouts knew some of the fundimentals
of camping saved me alot of time and energy. Giving the cubs some
experience camping, even if it is indoor in the winter, can only increase
their enjoyment of the whole experience. Other cub packs in our district
only go to one weekend camp at the end of the year and their boys, I feel,
are not ready for their first Scout camp.
