In following the thread on homesickness, one of the subtopics has been
the difficulty the boys have (and adults) in using the available
facilities. For all Scouters, I highly recommend the book "How to S**t
in the Woods" by Kathleen Meyer. It has been in print for 8 years, and
is available through large bookstores and outdoor outfitters. Cost is
about $7, and I will suggest that Scouter's Journal get some copies.
Written in clear, no-nonsense terms, Ms. Meyer is very good on how to
build latrines and catholes, how to use them, and what to do with the
results. For female Scouters and backpackers, she presents some very
good, proven methods for their needs.
The book also has some suggestions on how to make it easier to use what
is available. One of the key things is diet--keep that fiber and water
going, even if you have to add a cup of Metamucil to the morning OJ.
Anyway, check out the book before you camp or hike--it is great!
