For those with no immediate access to _Scouting_, the offiical publication
of the Boy Scouts of America, the magazine is published:
January-February
March-April
May-June
September
October
November-December
As you can see here, it's NOT "10 times a year" but rather "ten months of
the year", six issues for the price of US $2 (which is part of the seven
dollar adult registration fee).
The reason why _Scouting_ is not published during the summer months, is
because most if not all of the editorial staff is out at camp, conferences,
and other summer events (Philmont and this year, the National Jamboree)
and putting together items for the coming fall and spring's issues. This
also gives the tired small staff time for summer vacations and personal
career development time.
_Scouting_'s publication schedule (bi-monthly during the winter/spring and
monthly during most of the fall) lends itself to coverage. Since the new
program year starts in August in most places (July in those other
locations), the September issue gets us all ready for the new program year
with announcements of program changes, updates, and outlines of how the
national organization sees the new program year. The October issue has
always been the "Let's Join Scouting!" issue, devoted to sharing things that
new Scouters would like to know about the organization as well as getting
those first Courts of Honor, Pack Meetings and other events going full-tilt.
As the holidays roll around, the combined Nov/Dec issue focuses on those
things and wraps up the previous calendar year of Scouting for local Council
usage primarily.
The spring issues are all bi-monthly in part due to program emphasis:
Jan/Feb is SME/FOS and Scouting's anniversary month activities; Mar/Apr
emphases outdoor and conservation activities as well as a preview of camp
programs and training opportunities; and May/June gets us all ready for the
summertime activities of Cubbing although there's a lot
of Scouting in those pages that month too.
It's not "carved in stone", but that's roughly why the issues are spread out
the way they are....it's a formula that has worked well for the Editorial
Service of the BSA for years, and its something that has made _Scouting_well
worth your registration fees to get.
If you're NOT getting _Scouting_, please contact your District
professional/career Scouter and let him or her know as soon as possible.
