Kevin,

I want to commend you for what you did. I would do the same thing in
similar circumstances. I would be more troubled if it were just one
child, boy or girl, that I let into my house. The only other
alternative other than refusing to let them in, would be to call the
police. While this would protect you from false accusations, here in
the US it could cause the parents a lot of trouble over what could be
an innocent mistake. The police may refer the matter to the
Children's Services organization for investigation of possible
neglect. My wife and I both work and sometimes neither of us is home
by the time the schoolbus drops them off. They both have keys to the
house and are old enough to be left alone. But they are also
teenagers and often forget their keys, even when asked about them as
they leave for school in the morning. My kids could easily find
themselves in the same situation. There is a risk in what you did,
but I would do the same thing you did.
