We don't do uniform inspections in our Pack. During leader training our Council
says this: If you have a uniform inspection and the scout is in a uniform no
matter how it is worn, all you should do is congratulate him on his snappy look.
Even if his shirt tail is out and his neckerchief is skewed off to the side, he
may be feeling really proud of having done it himself. No criticism is allowed.
We generally take that to the extreme, I guess and don't do inspections at all.
If we did do them, we'd probably not do a single award, but have an award (bead,
feather, token) for each Den that had all members in uniform of any kind. So if
someone showed up without a uniform, their Den wouldn't get an award, but
there'd be no criticism of the uniformed Cubs.
You might wonder how they're supposed to get the uniforms looking strack (is
that just a military term?) without detailed inspection. I don't think it's that
important, but a word to the parents wouldn't be out of line. If the boys and
the parents have met the requirements of the Cub Scouts (i.e. Done Their Best --
even if it's not "right") then that's OK. We're talking 6 to 9 years old here --
10 at the outside. It's not the time or place to get persnickety about uniform
details.
I was in the Army 'way back and I can tell you the worst looking Cub Scout Den
still outshines any Air Force squadron... if they can get away with it, the kids
can too. ;-)
