MAFEKING RELIEVED! May 17, 1900

Lew Orans (lporans@ONRAMP.NET)
Sun, 18 May 1997 06:50:42 -0500

Yesterday was the 97th anniversary of the Relief of Mafeking, an event
which brought B-P to the attention of the British Public and did much to
help create the environment and impetus his success in creating the Scout
Movement.

I am pleased to announce the following additions and revisions to the
Pine Tree Web. They expand considerably the materials on B-P and his
life. I hope you will find them of interest.

Added: Chapter VII: The South African War from Baden-Powell's
Lessons from the Varsity of Life. May 17 marks the
anniversary of the Relief of Mafeking in 1900. Here is B-P's own story
his role in the South African War (The Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902).

In two parts:

"Mission to South Africa"

http://rampages.onramp.net/~lporans/bp-sa-mission.htm

"Defence and Relief of Mafeking"

http://rampages.onramp.net/~lporans/bp-sa-seige.htm

Added: Excerpts from Baden-Powell's Lessons from the Varsity of
Life from chapters on=20

"Pig-Sticking"=09

http://rampages.onramp.net/~lporans/bp-pigsticking.htm

"Spying and Scouting"

http://rampages.onramp.net/~lporans/bp-spy.htm

"Soldiering in India"

http://rampages.onramp.net/~lporans/bp-vars-india.htm

"Soldiering in Zululand"

http://rampages.onramp.net/~lporans/bp-vars-zululand.htm

"Soldiering in Ashanti"

http://rampages.onramp.net/~lporans/bp-vars-ashanti.htm

Expanded: A Baden-Powell Photo Gallery. A collection of photographs and
drawings of Baden-Powell highlighting his life and works. The "Gallery"
now includes over 50 photographs from B-P's "two lives" and is organized
in three sections:=20

"Early Years and Military Years"

http://rampages.onramp.net/~lporans/bp-pictures.htm

"Scouting with Baden-Powell, 1907-1929"

http://rampages.onramp.net/~lporans/bp-pictures2.htm

"Scouting with Baden-Powell, 1929-1941"

http://rampages.onramp.net/~lporans/bp-pictures3.htm

Added:=A0"Enterprise" by Hilary Saint George Saunders. This short biography
of B-P is much the idealized version of his life. Written shortly after
World War Two, it forms part of a testimony to the contribution of Scouts
in Occupied Europe and England during the dark days of the war. While
occasionally relying more on drama than on fact, this chapter on B-P
provides a good capsule biography and introduction to his "Two Lives."
Excerpted from Hilary Saint George Saunders, The Left
Handshake, 1948. It begins with a wonderful description of the
Memorial Service for B-P at Saint Paul's after World War Two.

Added: The 13th Hussars and The Light Dragoons providing history and
traditions of B-P's Regiment. The 13th Hussars were his first posting,
and he would return to their ranks over his career. Although he would
later command the 5th Dragoons, the 13th Hussars always remained "his
regiment." In retirement, as a Lieutenant General, he would serve as the
Regiment's Colonel.

As always, your comments, criticisms and suggestions are appreciated.

Yours in Scouting,

Lew Orans
