The Boy Scouts of America doesn't have a policy whereby only married people
nor people with children are the only ones *capable* of being Scoutng
leaders....all we ask of you is that you are at least 18 years of age
(in your case, 21 is good enough), a US citizen, and of sound moral standing
(to be determined by the Pack that "hires" you), and finally to agree to the
BSA's religious declaration statement (basically it says that the BSA
doesn't favor one religion over another, that Scouts and Scouters believe in
something higher than ones self, which doesn't equal "God" per-se, and that
the BSA encourages youth members (and adults) to seek and find their own
religious life through the programs and while being a member of the program.
The exact wording is found on the cover of the application you fill out).
Before I was married, I served as a Den Leader, Assistant Den Leader, Den
Leader Coach and later on as a Commissioner. After I was married, I
continued onward as Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster of two Troops
and when my daughter was born, as Advisor to two Posts.
The most important thing, James, is your willingness to be of service to
others. Don't let the fact that you're single and childless deter you from
helping out....and don't let small minds in a Pack which tells you "naw,
can't let ya" deter you from finding a Pack or Troop that CAN use your help
and assistance!
