Re: We Tried To Help!!!

All,
I really hope the unfortunate circumstances that led to this incident
don't sour other Troops on offering their help to NPS and other
professional resource management agencies.
We have been involved down here with the folks at Everglades National
Park for some time. Not only do they welcome the help we can give, they
provide plenty of Eagle project fodder, give us access to otherwise
off-limits areas for educational campouts and also give our Scouts a
real appreciation for our shared heritage here in South Florida.
Steve makes a good point in suggesting that you not push yourselves on
the ranger types if they are that overwhelmed by the requirements of
getting the area back in some safe order. Remember that those guys have
liability concerns just as we all do.
A reasonable request to the park people might be to ask one of their
number to try to make a single Troop meeting to explain the situation to
the boys and their parents. It might also be the time for the
Citizenship(s) and EnviroScience merit badge classes to write their
congresspersons to try to get some adequate funding for these folks.
Maybe if they were properly staffed, Troops that wish to help could be
allwed to do so.

YiS,
Doug Roach
