I agree that Eagles everywhere lose a little luster with every
cop-out project. However, I'm wondering how this luster became
so closely associated with the project. As I recall, the Eagle
service project didn't even begin until about the mid 1960's.
Surely Eagle was still a prestigious honor for those who earned it
before then (Pres. Ford, many astronauts, John Holladay, et al).
Along the same lines I don't believe that Eagles were "worth" any
less when the requirements were revised back to 21 merit badges
(from the 24 that were required for a portion of the 1970's). Eagle
projects are wonderful things--but I often wonder if we can put far
more emphasis on them than need be.
