A Cool 16th Scouting Birthday Present

Ed Henderson (BigEdBSA@AOL.COM)
Mon, 17 Mar 1997 01:51:57 -0500

My Assistant Scoutmaster is so cool!

Her son, my Quartermaster is going to be 16 this Tuesday. They got a car for
him but they are not going to do anything traditional like wrap up the car
keys like most parents would.

His parents laid out a neighbourhood compass course. He will take a series
of bearing and headings when he gets home on Tuesday. Their parents got the
neighbourhood involved in this project. At each point, he will find a clue
or knock on a front door. He gets a Backpack at one house, at another he
will get other items (most of them Scouting). At the next to the last house,
he gets a Traffic Safety Merit Badge Book (from, unbeknownst to him, his soon
to be Merit Badge Counselor who also happens to be the City of Griffin
Traffic Engineer). Finally he ends up across the street from his house
where, for about 10 days his car has been parked and waiting for him.

It would take an Eagle Woodbadger & Veteran Scouter to come up with this
uniquely Scouting approach to a Birthday celebration.

So.....if you are on the southside of Griffin GA on Tuesday March 19th and
you see a 16 year old fumbleing with a compass frantically running around the
neighborhood in desperate search of.....clues.....whatever. Be kind a wish
him Happy Birthday.

YIS,

Ed Henderson
Scoutmaster BSA Troop 12
Griffin, GA, Flint River Council

P.S. - He is a Life Scout and almost Eagle. Although he has been on a
learners for several months, and will get his regular license next week he
won't be allowed to drive by himself until he completes his Eagle. His Dad
said that completing his Eagle was a way or demonstrating that he is
responsible enough to drive on his own.
