Cheryl,
Thanks very much for your reply about the video and our County's new
system for approving volunteer helpers. I certainly do agree with you
that it is, unfortunately, a great way to halt the recruitment of adult
help. I went to a district meeting to say so, arrived late and made my
comment, only to find that everyone else present had said the same
thing! Folk seem to approve of the automatic police check, but wanted
reassurances about the confidential nature of references. No-one
supported the idea of an interview with district for helpers who just
drive a car!
Another interesting point is that when the overwhelming majority of the
leaders in an area have one view, but the few who are appointed as their
bosses are scared and chose to hold another, impractical view (which is
easy for them, since they don't run packs or troops themselves), there
seems to be little direct accountability to the members.
Anyhow, having opposed this aspect of the County's measures, I thought
I'd try to say something positive, hence my interest in the BSA training
videos. Some list readers have given helpful ideas about getting hold of
a copy, which the County might find handy.
All the best,
Chris Boardman
