Gear update

To all:
Many questions pass on both of these sites about what gear to choose.
Try the following source. BACKPACKER Magazine, March 1997 issue, is on
the newsstands now. This issue covers over 3000 items, including
extensive coverage of tents, sleeping bags, and boots, as well as very
good coverage of "how to" and "avoid this". This issue does not do a
great job of comparisons, so much of the guidance for decision making is
subjective. Other issues do more comparisons. A prior issue had
outstanding information on water purification while on the trail.
Please be aware that this magazine, while a great source of information,
is not a Scouting document; nor do its ideals precisely match those of
Scouting. The concepts of "courteous" and "reverent" are not strongly
held, especially in the advertising. I would suggest that an adult
review a couple of issues prior to allowing a younger Scout free access
to this magazine. The March 1997 issue is more benign than usual.
