Re: Boy Scout Activities and funds to achieve Eagle

I don't see how it can cost 100 dollars a month to go camping in our troop we
have 2 outings a month which cost between 4-15 dollars per scout including
food. This pays for the camping, food, and 2 leaders to go. We ask the parents
to donate their gas and time to transport the scouts. This usually brings
along more leaders(they pay). I can not comprehend how the troop can justify
asking for 100 dollars a month. As for fundraiers in our troop we have two
parents who look for fund-raiser. They say to when ever a big event comes to
town to ask if the troop can do something such as litter control. usually the
troop can do this much cheaper than a company. Also try asking at some of the
local supermarkets. Many will let you offer to bag each customer's goods for
tips. Cub does this in MN.

If my troop started asking for $100 a month I would change troops. The troop
should not make any money on camping at all.

Subject: Boy Scout Activities and funds to achieve Eagle

What do you do when the SM asks why a scout is not going on all the
activities and camp outs?

Most of the scout trips are ranging from $100 to over $500 (summer
activity) per trip per month.
Is this expense common in other scout troops?
How many of these trips does a scout need to go on before he can obtain
Eagle?

I am after suggestions and ideas to help this young scout. He just made
tenderfoot, and has his eyes set
on Eagle. I would like to help him achieve his goal. He participates in
all scout fund raisers and troop fund raisers,
but it does not seem to help with the expense of the outing.

Being a Cubmaster of a pack that has a many low level income families, we
tend to utilize state parks that
offer group camping (at discount rates), borrow canoes from the troop.
We even make craft tables from scrap
2x4's and find low cost ways to have fun and earn merit badges. Many of
the parents of our scout families
have two jobs or work 6 days a week to make ends meet. I would like to
help the scouts of these families reach
whatever goal they want and not have to worry about the family budget.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.
