Hey all...
I just read about the "proud Papa" and I had to chime in. Last year my
Tiger won second place overall... with a lot of Dad's help. This year he
wanted ALL of the marbles and worked really hard... even had me do the
wheel polishing that many seem to think is anathema (but allowed in our
Pack's rules). He was ready and eager for the day to begin, and he and I
had our usual talk about "doing your Best" being the big issue. He seemed
oblivious to what I was saying.
Well now, last year our Pack was pretty competitive, and I was
horrified
at all of the crying that went on. Our Cub Master pointed out that there
could be only one "winner" but that did not seem to help. As Cub Master
this year, I have emphasized the concept of "Do your Best" as the epitomy
of competition and winning as merely fleeting. Well, it seemed to work, no
one had tears this year (a record???) and my son did sooooooo well. He did
not even place in his den, and after it was over, he told me how neat the
Tiger's car that won the whole thing was. I think I will still keep
preaching the concept of everyone is a winner, but not everyone gets a
trophy, and that "Doing your Best" is the best thing to do. I was pretty
proud of those Cubbies of mine... especially the one on them "Goodyear
Racing slicks".
