Army cadets, Air Training Corps (Air Force cadets) and Naval Reserve Cadets
are the main ones. A more recent innovation locally is Police Rangers;
basically the same concept and activities as the military cadet units, but
based around police with uniforms modelled on police uniforms. About 20 or
so years ago most high schools had a cadet unit (usually army cadets) In the
aftermath of Vietnam this fell into disfavour and the goverment changed some
policy (I think it probably had to do with funding, but don't recall much
detail) so that most of these school-based units closed down. Now there are
moves to re-introduce school cadet units. I some ways this is some concern
in the sense that it is in direct competition to scouting; we have to
compete with free uniforms, a programme perceived as being more exciting and
without the "boring" moral aspects.
