Micheal,
My District runs an almost-two-weekend "JLT" program based upon the SM
Fundamentals model. It's popular with the Scouts, but I don't think
they really learn how to lead.
We start with an "all-day" (10 am - 3 pm) Saturday class (inside) where
we teach the "dry" stuff like The Importance of The Patrol Method, Troop
Organization, How to Hold An Effective PLC Meeting, etc.. We adults
feed them lunch and clean up for them. On the next weekend we go to our
Scout Camp where they get lots of team-building exercises with "what did
you learn" discussions afterward, and some short lectures sprinkled in
to help them remember why they're there. We start the weekend session
right after work on Friday night and hold them until late Sunday
afternoon (we all eat supper at home).
Pros: Appeals to short attention spans, emphasis on fun, inexpensive.
Cons: No meaningful amount of time allocated to train Scouts how
to plan an outing. No hands-on use of resources such as
Woods Wisdom, JLT Handbook.
How would I use the extra weekend if I were B-P?
Pros: More time could be allocated to teaching how to plan an outing
and how to a "real" Patrol Leader (responsibility, committment,
actually making the phone calls, writing things down, delegating
correctly, etc.). The JLT Handbook could become a text book
used for
an open book quiz (questions aimed at Scout's current job). Time
could be spent on teaching the Scouts how to teach, them letting them
go home and preparing the lesson before returning next
weekend to
actually teach it.
Cons: More expensive, more difficult(?), less fun(?).
