New Urban Troop

Remember the first day I told you all about the new troop I had just
started in one of the housing developments? I was real excited and got
lots of encouragement from everyone. Well, here's the latest. Course
there is no scoutmaster for this troop of 5 boys, but they are so
excited to be boy scouts. I have put together a new plan. They are
the test unit.

I have contacted several of our council's most experienced scouters,
all have been everything from cm to wb trainers. I have one man that
is going to come to as many meetings as it takes to help the boys fill
all the first aid requirements (for Tenderfoot, 2nd and 1st class),
one is coming to all knots, lashings, gadgets etc., one will do all
nature (plants, reptiles etc.) one will do compass, map reading
etc.(the hikes and all that) and one is coming to do totin chip, axe,
knife, saw etc. with them. All the people I called were so happy to
help and really anxious I think to do it. I have a list I am working
on, I have a swim instructor, a fire builder, a cook, and many more on
my list. Calling each one I offered them whatever their specialty
was. I was open for whatever they wanted to give. I hope this
system works, it will give the boys such a great opportunity to work
with a variety of males (for those of you that are anti female sm) I
will be there to keep records, keep a sense of consistency but provide
a great variety of teaching styles, and knowledge. I am really
excited to see it all come to gether. Next Saturday I take them to
our camp to visit the Klondike Derby. We're not going to participate,
no equipment or skills yet, but we will spend the day there and cook
our lunch, their first attempt is going to be easy, an old standby,
"hobo stew" they laughed at first but decided it would be fun. I
kind of had to convince them of that! I am ready to set up the same
shared leadership plan with another troop and find it great fun
working on the list! I'll keep you posted as to their progress.
Please remember I am always interested in suggestions.
