Blue & Gold Banquet

I need the wisdom of the Cub Scouters on Scouts-L to help me with this
dilemna regarding the active roles Cubs should have in their Blue & gold
banquet.
Our pack committee decided at the January meeting to have the leaders do
a skit as the sole source of entertainment. They do not want the boys to
perform, to lead a song, to do magic tricks, etc. Boys and fathers (or
adult males) will bake a cake for the father & son cake bake, with these
being used for our dessert. We will purchase placemats and napkins; dens
will make centerpieces for each of their tables.
My dilemna is: I thought these banquets were created to showcase our
Cubs talents, to show parents what they ahd learned in den meetings and
pack meetings, all in celebration of their organization's founding.
By having the boys make invitations, placemats, name cards, nut cups,
decorations, sing a song, do a little run on or two, help set up tables
and chairs, or decorate the banquet hall -- this makes it their party.
Parents are needed for some preparations, such as edible food!!
I find our pack gradually going away from the traditions and away from
what I believe is in the boys' best ineterest in as far as his scouting
experience. Whether this comes out of ease, out of making things a
little "prettier" or what, I don't know what it's attributed to; maybe a
little of each.
We used to have the banquet on Tuesday nights, keeping the night
consistent with our pack meeting. Five years ago we changed the B&G
to a Saturday to help ease the strain on working families. We
generally start the banquet at 5:30 and end around 7:30 p.m. It is pot
luck, so each family then share's that responsibility.
Several years we had entertainment, a little from Scouts mixed with some
from the community. One year we had a Scout bagpipe troop perform; one
year a magician.
Can anyone offer some advice to this comittee chair and her Cubmaster
husband?
