Children's Stories

Shoot, I can remember the stories myself. The middle child had this great
Brain (I think that was included in the title somewhere.) The youngest
child was adopted. All the boys had the same middle name in order to remind
them of some terrible misdeed done by one of their ancestors. The silent
treatment was used as a form of punishment in their family. The middle
child, aka the great brain, was always coming up with some sort of scheme to
make money. The middle child eventually went away to school (I'm not sure
if it was by scholarship or not) and came up with a way to sneak out and buy
candy by getting demerits and put on bathroom duty. If all this sounds
familiar, then we are thinking about the same series. The only clue I can
give you is that I believe Great Brain (or maybe just brain) is in the title
somewhere. And, the books are written from the viewpoint of the middle
child. He was the younger of two I believe until his parents adopted
another son. I can tell you its not Encyclopedia Brown. Encyclopedia Brown
books are great, but most appear to be compilations of short mystery cases.
Which doesn't appear to be what you're looking for. I think we're thinking
of the same thing...the embarassment at indoor plumbing being the clue that
tipped me off. I believe, the great brain charged all the kids in the
neighborhood a fee of five cents to get a demonstration? Good Luck, and if
you do find the stories let me know. I believe, I'm raising one of those
great brains myself...now, can I turn him away from the dark side? <eg>
