One of the best all time pinewood derby cars I ever built used a couple of
AA batteries as weights. The underside of the car was hollowed out to
accomodate the batteries, which served a second purpose. The design of
the car involved two drilled holes in the rear where light bulbs were
fitted in. The insides of the holes were painted orange/red. Small wires
went from the bulbs through a smaller hole at the bottom of the bore and
connected to the batteries. When going down the track, the car looked
like it had flames coming from the engine. Pretty neat -but alas it was
a slow car and the cubmaster creator was beaten by every challenging cub
to their great delight. They all felt like winners and had a good time
beating the CM after the big race was over.
