Hiking with Wlkee Talkee

Nathan Mann (ndmann@TACL.DNET.GE.COM)

This past year we were blessed with the donation of a nice set of walkee
talkees
spare battery packs, and chargers. Previously, we had experience using them
while running district events - 2 fall Cub-O-Ree's, 1 scout Skill-O-Ree, four
cub daycamps. All were relatively compact areas, with no major hills. We
were really *excited* by the donation!

Successful hiking and contact with radios varies with the terrain. In the
Red River Gorge area of eastern Ky, range is much different than on a lake.

Being a larger troop, we may break into several smaller groups for hiking
rather than being one mass of kids scaring the wildlife and tourists.
(A 3-5 person group is much more likely to discover a fawn by a trail than
a 30 person group)

Anyway, one technique we use is to only POWER ON at pre-set times... such as
every quarter or half hour. (We still carry whistles for emergency
signaling.)

You might want to make a DISCHARGE device, to fully discharge your nicads.
We re-charge the week of an event. I've heard a stored nicad will lose about
10% or more of it's charge per month, even when not used. A Discharge device
is nothing more than a suitable resistive load.
