Re: virus alert-Virus Alert

I don't know how many false virus alerts I have seen on Scouts-L. But, I
know it's more than I care to count. I am sure that everyone that posted
such a message had good intentions. It almost seems, however, that many
times "the message is the virus".

I would advise anyone who wants to be helpful and pass on virus information
to this list to first check out the information they are to post. If you
have Web access, a good place to look is:

http://www.kumite.com/myths/ (Computer Virus Myths)

This site is updated regularly and is used by many professionals. It has
information on the Penpal Greetings virus, Deeyenda virus, GHOST, Irina
virus, PKZIP300, Netscape letter bomb, Black Widow Java virus, millennium
virus, Gulf War virus, Good Times virus, and many, many more. Many of these
are now in the category of "Urban Legend".

The site has general information on computer viruses and is interesting in
its own right.

As a computer professional, I regularly (at least weekly) receive warnings
about real computer viruses. I rarely will pass any of these on to the
outside world, and would never do so unless I can verify the report and
include a Web address, E-mail address, 800 number, or other contact point
for the information.

Please, if you are thinking about warning people on a distribution list
about a virus, or anything else. take the time to verify the information you
received and get a contact point that you can pass on with the information.
