If anyone hasn't discovered Backpacker Magazine, you might want to take a
look at it. IMHO it has the best information on equipment, skills, and
destinations available. Most of the equipment reviewed tends to be too
expensive for Scouts, but the principles of what makes good equipment, what
to look, and what to avoid for is invaluable. I use it constantly as a
resource for anything from how to dress warm, to low impact camping
techniques, to food ideas.
The Buyers Guide not only reviews equipment but also gives a good brief
summary of important features in each type of equipment.
You can find it at B Dalton and larger magazine racks.
