Subject: Press Release from ASDA
Release: Immediate 19 November, 1996
ASDA COOKS UP A NEW SCHEME FOR SCOUTS
Thousands of Cub Scouts will be moving from the camp fire to the kitchen
and aiming to add a proficiency badge to their uniform - the ASDA -
sponsored cooks Badge.
ASDA, which will also be getting Scouts to help pack shopper's bags in
the run-up to Christmas, is sponsoring a badge that will recognise a
Scout's culinary skills.
To qualify for this badge, Cub Scouts will have to know the importance of
a balanced diet and demonstrate their practical skills in planning,
cooking, serving and clearing a two course meal for at least two people.
Over 25,000 badges are expected to be awarded during 1997.
Local Group Scout Leaders are also liasing with ASDA store managers
within the 209 stores in the busy pre-Christmas period. The uniformed
Scouts will be on hand to offer assistance to shoppers with bag packing
and carrying in order to help raise funds for local Groups.
Similar initiatives have been welcomed by customers and Scout Groups
alike in previous years, but this is the first time arrangements have
been made with all ASDA stores.
ASDA Chief Executive Allan Leighton said: "The Scout Movement has a great
sense of tradition and provides young people with constructive, focused
activities. They also like to have fun, and that's what shopping at ASDA
is all about, so we will make a great team."
"Scouting is renowned as a Movement which not only provides exciting and
challenging activities but also helps other people. With the support of
Asda, we are able to offer a practical and helpful public service whilst
raising much needed funds for local Groups", said Derek Twine, Chief
Executive of The Scout Association. "We have over half a million Scouts
and cooking is a very popular activity. Asda's sponsorship of our Cooks
Badge will help give even more young people the fun and skills of
cooking" he added.
