In our troop we charge $10/year annual adult dues. (The boys pay $30)
All participants in all activities pay the same price whether they are
youth or adult. We have several fundraisers each year, adult and youth
are both allowed to participate and benefit.
It can be expensive. Some adults have raised questions about charging
adults to help. My feeling has always been that if an 11 year old boy can
afford to pay his own way why shouldn't an adult?
I don't feel it is proper to charge the boys extra to pay for the adults,
the boys have trouble enough paying for their activities. I also do not
feel that our fundraising efforts should go towards raising money for
adults to go free.
I believe if we are teaching the boys proper citizenship then we should
demonstrate through practice that everyone should pay their own way in a
free society. In situations of extreme need we have helped Scouts
financially, but it is an exception rather than a rule. I prefer to offer
them the opportunity to earn their way through fundraising. I don't see why
adults should be a separate category. If participation cost is the same,
all participants should be charged the same.
We are volunteers. We donate our time. We shouldn't be expecting
any freebies in return.
This is only my humble opinion. I realize many others will have differing
opinions on this subject.
