Wait a minute folks. Whose program is this anyway ? We all know that the aim
is to increase the number we serve. Sometimes that isn't always possible. As
CC of a tropp in the 30 category, I had twoyeaers ago to make the decision
to 'clean the rolls' of names that had been eld on to for a few years too
many. Theese young men were costing us money that we needed for program for
those scouts who elct to stay in the program. We also have a wide range of
income classifications in our troop. That makes our responsibility to the
remaining scouts. Not the council's or national's goals of recruitment. We
get our share each year, but I am not going to hold over numbers to fit some
admitedly arbitrary goal.
I have been a commission salesman for 26 years. One of the things I have
learned is to use the proper product for the proper situation. Let the
commissions take care of themselves. Sometimes the companies set goals for
their own reasons that may not coincide with present conditions in the
field. Scouting is no different. National does a great job of overall
program, providing us with program guides and personnel to keep it together.
WE are in the trenches. Let's keep it in perspective.
