The academics and sports loops are about as flexible as anything in
scouting. The "requirement" for earning a loop is active participation in
the related activity. As such, our Pack uses the loops to recognize boys
who participate in programs outside of school and scouting such as Odyssey
of the Mind, community sports programs, music lessons, etc. We also
recognize the boys' efforts on BIG school projects which often take them
away from scouting for a meeting or two. Most of my Webelos Scouts had a
multi-month project about a state of their choice last year. There were a
few meetings where I lost 50% of the boys because they were meeting
deadlines.
Rather than get mad about prodigal scouts, this is an opportunity to say
that other enrichment programs are important to a boy's growth and we are
proud of their acheivement. And in scouting you can get an award to show
for it. ;)
Budget accordingly.
