Hello Guilherme!!
The only truly foolish questions are the ones we are too bashful
to ask! If wishing to learn "more about scouting in other countries" is
foolish, sign me up!! These scouting oriented listserves are made for
such as this.
Yes, Eagle is the highest "level" in USA scouting... there are
other different, very high honors and awards in various organizations
within US scouting (Order of the Arrow, Exploring, and such) but the
Eagle is the one award by which we US scouters pretty universally measure
excellence. It is the highest earned youth award of Boy Scouts of America
(ages 11-18). It requires the completion of all preceding progressive
ranks: Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, and Life. It requires
the completion of 21 "merit badges", awards for competence or experience
in a wide array of skillan interest areas, 11or 12 of which are specified
and the others are the scouts choice. The scout must complete a major,
approved service project that benefits his community, In addition he must
show himself to be an excellent leader and scouting participant, and be
approved by his scoutmaster and a panel of reviewers. When we see an
Eagle scout we USA scouters know we are looking at a young man who has
shown remarkable drive, determination, and self discipline, who
exemplifies the qualities associated with scouting worldwide. He is a
young man who can be depended on, who can lead others, and who will
conduct himself as an example for other scouts. Sounds pretty perfect,
hey? Well, they are still fallable humans, but the Eagles I know, and I
know a lot of them, strive to be the person Ive described, and if they
fall short, hey, they just shake it off and strive a little harder!
I hope that gives you a feel for USA scoutings higest award. I'm
certain Brazil has honors in its scouting program that convey the same
comcepts. I'll bet you are working toward yours! Your post glows with
scouting enthusiasm! Don't ever lose it!
