Disclaimer: Although I am a member of the US Army, I have no official
connections with the editorial staff or publishers of the _Army Times_, the
Times Publishing Company. I do, however, read the _Times_ each week,
because "if it's in the _Army_Times_, you _know_ it's for real!"
The Times Publishing Company, located in Springfield, Virginia, are the
publishers of weekly journals for all branches of the American military as
well as for civilian
workers. Every summer, the Company writes to military facililities and ask
them to provide information on their installations, including housing,
camping and outdoor
facilities, tourist information as well as basic information of interest to
military or
civilian personnel and their families making a new move to their location.
Every fall, they collate the information and prepare a special insert called
"Guide to Installations and Facilities in the USA" to their publications and
make this information available to the public.
The facililties are listed in alphabetical order, by branch of service and
by state or
territory. Facilities targeted for closure under one of the Base
Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Acts are also listed, with a directory of
what "life support facilities" are available and on which day(s).
Facilities which have assumed new
missions or which are shared by two or more branches are listed under the branch
of service with the majority residents or which serves a larger branch
"community".
Of interest to youth agency leaders and members are recreational facilities,
camping
and outdoor recreation sites, marinas, temporary housing and guest house
facilities.
These facilities, while established for members of the Department of Defense
and other federal agencies and their families, are frequently available for
usage by *certified official non-profit organizations and groups* upon
request and in a space-available basis. Many of these facilities and
resources are available at little or
no cost.
I use this annual directory to assist Scouters and others wanting
information on places to stay enroute to or from national Scouting events
and Exploring superactivities. The directory is invaluable because not only
does it list the facilities
available, but most importantly gives the phone number of the point-of-contact
for permission to use/rent/reserve those facilities by individuals or groups.
The only things the Directory does not contain are the National Guard and
Reserve
Centers located within each major city with a significant population as well as
National Park Service, Departments of the Interior, Commerce, and Health and
Human Services (HHS) facilities which do include guest houses, hangers, and open
areas suitable for overnight camping. For that information, I encourage you to
contact the National Guard, military Reserve, NPS, or other facility through
local
or long-distance directory assistance.
The 1997 Guide to Military Installations and Facilities is available for
free to subscribers of any of the Times Publishing Company's publications:
Army Times, Air Force Times, Navy Times, Federal Times and Defense
Department Trends; it can also be purchased by contacting the Times
Publishing Company, 6883 Commercial Drive, Springfield, Virginia
22159-0230. There is a reasonable cost for the paper insert, normally
around $3.00. The Guide typically comes out in the edition scheduled for
the last Monday of October of each year.
Hope this information is of help to you as you help to plan your unit's next
"big
adventure" or as you participate in one of your youth agency's national events.
Remember that these facilities are available on a SPACE-AVAILABLE BASIS
and therefore you need to reserve appropriate facilities in advance and
insure that
you have a "Plan B" just in case the facility gets over-run by Generals or
Congressmembers, thereby closing you and your group out!! *heheeehehehee*
