Patrol system

I've just read an article in Scouts-L which mentions that US girl scout
troops do not operate a patrol system. Is this true? If so, anyone know why
not?
I always thought that scouting and guiding throughout the world was based
upon BP's principles of leadership and that the foundation of the
company/unit was the patrol.
How is the average US girl scout troop organised, are the girls split into
groups at all and if so how, by age or ability or what?
As our system is based so much on the patrol as the main unit I am intrigued
as to how other systems work. Or is it that UK guiding is the only country
within WAGGGS using patrols?
