Mark,
I am a diabetic Scouter. This past month, I went on two campouts.
The comments I have read have been good. You do need to find out
if he is insulin dependent or not. And it is true that each
diabetic reacts to some foods very differently. Pasta and rice
come to mind. I can eat some, without difficulty. Some diabetics
have to shun those foods like the plague. Only experience will tell.
What can I add...
I think at least one leader on every outing should know how to
check the boy's blood glucose (he'll likely have a meter). They
are simple to use, and are small and light. You should also
be aware of what normal is for him before meals, and after, AND
what to do about aou of range readings. If he is insulin dependent,
someone needs to know hoe to give him his shot, in case he can't.
You should make sure he has his meter, and any medications with
him before departure.
I live a fairly normal life, and in many ways I am healthier now
than prior to my diagnosis. I can do the things I did before,
I just need to be careful, and listen to my body. He will learn
how to do the same.
