American Heritage update

Hi all

Since I made the original post about this award, there have had several
responses, and I thank you all for your input. I thought you all might
like an update.

First of all, several of you question the deadline. Well, yes there was
a specified deadline, one which I did not set. According to our
Council's description on segment patches, they set the deadline. This
patch segment was to be on the American spirit shown between Memorial
Day and Labor Day. This is the description I received and this is the
description that I followed.

What I finally realized was that I needed to ask myself if the Living
Museum site was going to qualify. As I originally stated, after doing
some research into the Living Museum, yes, this site would qualify.
Also after talking with our DE, he agreed that this site would qualify.
BTW, the DE was present at the Living Museum site as well.

I was basing my decision not to award this Scout on the fact that his
parents didn't at first think this site was going to qualify as valid.
If this family was not a close friend of ours, we wouldn't have known of
their intentions or what they felt would qualify, and we wouldn't be
having this problem.

This Scout does work hard on all of his achievements...he does not
"slide" right on by nor do his parents just sign him off because other
boys advance.

I also kept in mind that this segment was not a requirement of
advancement of rank. This was something we let all parents know about
so that if they wanted to participate, they could. No one else knew
anything about the problems behind the scenes so to speak and especially
not the boys, so no one else was put on the spot. (The only ones that
knew were me, my Cubmaster husband, and the Scout's parents).

Thank you all again for your input into this matter. You are all very
kind and supportive.

YIS,

Cathy Carver
