A small correction: President Johnson did attend the 1964 Jamboree and
spoke at the Arena Show.
In point of fact, very few presidents have attended jamborees over the
nearly 60 year history of their existence in the USA (1937-1997)
The following facts may be of interest (presidents who did not attend):
President Kennedy could not have attended a jamboree as none was scheduled
during his regretably brief tenure as president (1961-63).
President Nixon did not attend the 1969 or the 1973 Jamborees while he was
in office (1969-74)
President Ford (an Eagle Scout) was not in office during a scheduled
Jamboree (1974-77)
President Carter did not attend the 1977 Jamboree while he was in office
(1977-1981)
President Reagan did not attend either the 1981 or the 1985 jamborees
while he was in office (1981-1989),
although Mrs. Reagan attended the 1985 and spoke at the Arena show.
The only presidential visits to jamborees have been as follows:
1960: President Eisehower toured Jamboree in a motorcade during the day
(Colorado Springs, CO)
1964: President Johnson Spoke at the Arena Show
(Valley Forge, PA)
1989: President Bush spoke at a special daytime gathering in the arena
(Ft. A.P. Hill, VA)
1967 12th World Jamboree, Idaho, USA, Vice President Humphrey visited
It is my understanding that a few vice presidents have visited earlier
National Jamborees (prior to 1957) but I have not confirmed this
information:
1953-then Vice President Nixon
I am certain of my facts as I have attended each jamboree from 1957-1993.
