Laurie/Awards & Netiquette

Hi all!

I have postponed writing as our pre-pack leaders (and commitee members)
meeting was held Tuesday night.

I am happy to report (thanks to your support and encouragement - approx.
5O pages of replys!!! - sorry I can't answer you all personally) that I
got up the nerve to bring up rank advancement awards at the pack meeting
(which was rather easy as they were discussing the Blue and Gold. It
was not a pretty sight (there were raised voices - and mine wasn't the
first :-P ). I was told that of coarse Liam could receive his award in
November if he chose - no one would ever say the kids had to wait for
their awards (yeah, o.k., right.... - they all did) - oh, did I mention
that I did call the council office about this? I think someone from
there may have spoken with our cub master... Anyway - I wasn't the most
popular person at the meeting - but it wasn't too bad. I did have
support of some of the other den leaders (who I spoke to prior to the
meeting as some of you suggested - I also spoke with an assist. cub
master who tried in the past to get them to allow the boys to receive
their rank when earned (one of her sons completed Wolf one year in Nov.
I believe she said). I'm sure she supported this behind closed doors
also. The girl in charge of advancement was not happy at all - she said
that if Liam received his rank at the next pack meeting then it would
start everyone wanting to earn their rank before the Blue and Gold
(heaven forbid!!! <g>). I said that I thought that was a good idea -
give the boys some incentive. I was told good luck when I have Wolves
next year as parents just don't bother with the kids. I am aware that
not all parents spend the same amount of (quality)time with their kids -
but I do intend on trying my best with the parents - I plan on handing
over Liam's old Wolf book to the Tiger parents after the first of the
year so each of them can look through it prior to our parents meeting
which I plan on holding (as in Tiger step 17) prior to the Tigers
graduation. - I also seem to be the first in our pack to know that
Tigers can earn their Bobcat at graduation in May - so if there is
anyone else out there who hasn't been able to get to the training or
obtain the new books - they can :-). I think it's a good idea to show
the boys after a year of doing basically nothing to earn their beads and
paws that they will need to work at things as Cub Scouts.

RE: Netiquette
I personally find reading questions/information rec'd through list mail
most informative. As we (my husband and I) may end up with both first
year Weblos and Wolf den (next year) it is interesting to me to read what
people have to say on other issues. If I want only a few
responses I could just write a letter and send it privately to several
list members. I thought the purpose of list mail was to share thoughts
and ideas. This is very important to me as at this point in my life I
cannot attend round table (no night time baby sitter - yet), and Pow-wow
(held all day on a Saturday when I teach catechism, and we have only one
car so my husband couldn't get to work, baby sitting etc...). I have a
hard time getting out right now and the information shared on this list
in invaluable to me.

RE:Listing towns and states in signature. Personally I think this is a
bad idea - state maybe but to give out too much personal information to
a complete mailing list may not be the wisest idea. In the past I had
written some negative posts re: and author and advertising - in a forum
discussion. Several months latter on another list this author posted
letters I had written (yes several months latter) and the realization
that there are some "different" people out there reading (and possibly
saving) everything we write in a bit ??? - well gives one a strange
feeling. I do think some caution should be used (even on a scouting
list) when posting on the internet. Just my opinion.
