Re: Scout Accounts

Our troop has maintained Scout accounts for many years, to permit each
Scout to have a credit for fundraisers such as popcorn sales, candy sales,
pancake breakfast fundraisers, etc. The only stipulation is that the
money be spent for Scouting related activities or items. Most Scouts use
the accounts to attend summer camp or other activities such as National
Jamboree. The Troop Treasurer maintains the account status on a data
base, and enters debits and credits as they are accrued or used. We give
our Scouts all the proceeds from their popcorn sales rather than putting
part of it in the troop general account, since we have other sources of
revenue.

We haven't experienced any disadvantages in the process other than the
occasional Scout who wants to have the money as cash to spend; and once
the policy is explained that it must be used for activities or Scout
related equipment items, they are very understanding. We publish a
monthly account statement so each Scout knows what his balance and
expenditures are, and post those at the troop meeting room, and present
them at committee meetings.

They are well received by the Scouts since they know they have a "savings
account" for activities and don't have to come up with funds on short
notice if things are a little "tight" financially at the time.
