SCOUTERS, NEED YOUR ADVICE:
In our Troop the question has come up regarding what we should do,
if anything, about Scouts that are not regularly participating in outings,
troop meetings, and patrol meetings. These scouts, however, do their
merit badge work, pay their dues and advance in rank in spite of their
lack of regular involvement.
A Suggestion has been made that the Troop committee with the
Scoutmaster should come up with and publish troop specific criteria
such as at least 50% participation at troop meetings, outings and patrol
meetings in order to be eligible for rank advancement.
Check with your council and see if they have any "Active Participant"
guidelines.
50% is not an unreasonable amount. However, you may lose those people who
just don't want to attend this types of functions. You may want to sit
down with the Scout and his parents and discuss with them why you need them
to attend these functions.
