The standard eight patrol name used by Wood Badge course in the
United States are:

Beaver
Bobwhite
Eagle
Fox
Owl
Bear
Buffalo
Antelope

Occasionally, when a course is larger than eight patrols (not too
common) another patrol name may be added. In other countries they
use different patrol names to reflect birds or animals native to
their own country.

In my experience (4 times Boy Scout Wood Badge staff) it is up to the
course director to make the final decision on the assignments to
patrols, although he/she can seek input from the rest of the staff.
The personal resource questionaire that each participant fills out is
used in this process to try and balance skills within each patrol.
Occasionally an individual will request a certain patrol, but unless
their reasons warrant special consideration, that does not mean that
they will or will not be assigned to that patrol. However, I cannot
speak for the way this process is handled in other councils.

I hope this helps.
