Today a friend who is the Group Scout Leader for Second
Stanmore (a suburb of London) British Scouts dropped by my office here
in London with an old BSA Troop Flag which had been hanging in the
Scout hut at RAF Stanmore for more than twenty years. The flag is a
standard Boy Scouts of America Troop flag, with red over white halves
with an old style green BSA emblem. The logotype reads as follows:
TROOP 96
(seal)
Dyess AFB - Old Chisolm Trail District
The flag has been mended several times and tabs have been
added over the years to allow it to hang in the old scout hut. =20
Now that the years have passed, and the corporate knowledge
has faded, the Uk Scouts have come to me to ask if there is any
interest from Troop 96 in the return of an ancient and honorable flag.
The leaders believe that in the past, 2nd Stanmore Scout Group was
"Twinned" with Troop 96 and the connection with USAF may be the link.
Is there anyone in Circle 10 or environs who has any
information about the old Troop Flag, and if so, can anyone offer it a
proper home and a place of hono(u)r? The 2nd Stanmore hope that the
memories and relationships of the past may be alive somewhere in the
"new" country.
The London area Scouters of the Channel District and
Transatlantic Council will be happy to hold the flag as an artifact,
but I wonder if there is someone with a better claim on the flag who
would give it a home in the true spirit of international Scouting.
Anyone with information on how the Second Stanmore came to be
in possession of the troop flag or with a responsible proposal for a
proper home for it should e-mail me privately and I will make
appropriate arrangements with 2nd Stanmore Scout Group, Harrow.
