Scouting Magazine Article on Internet Scouting

All,

I just read Ed Henderson's message regarding the article about Internet
Scouting resources on the Internet in the current issue of Scouting
magazine. I also welcome the attention to these resources. However, I
do have a reservation. I noticed references to the rec.scouting
newsgroups, but none to SCOUTS-L! I admit that I skimmed the article
pretty quickly, and may have missed something.

If they really left SCOUTS-L out, I wonder why? I don't mess with
newsgroups myself, but people I know who have followed both rec.scouting
and SCOUTS-L say that SCOUTS-L is much better quality. They say we have
less flaming and fewer irrelevant political discussions.

Maybe all it boils down to is that explaining how to subscribe to a
listserv group is a bit complicated. It is a lot easier to get into
newsgroups without a technical explanation. Of course, that may be part
of the reason why there is so much trash in (some) newsgroups.

I believe that the earlier Scouting magazine article about Internet
resources (a year or so ago and much shorter) also mentioned
rec.scouting but left out SCOUTS-L.

Why do I care? Because our fellow Scouters who should have had a chance
to join us on "the roundtable that never closes" missed being steered
our way.
