This is a canard of a brain teaser.
There are actually five words that end in "-gry" in English, but two of them
are so rare that I never remember both of them. If you get an unabridged
dictionary you'll find three that are listed as "common," but that doesn't
mean you'd use them every day.
The three "common" words are angry, hungry, and gry. You'll be hard put to
find a definition of "gry" until you find an unabridged dictionary. One of
the others is "aggry." Another might be "puggry," a variation of "puggree"
(a cloth band around the crown of a hat or helmet).
This is a common brain teaser, and it's really unfair, don't you think?
"Gry" is hardly common. Does your Scout have an answer?
Here in Dallas Glenn Mitchell on our NPR outlet, KERA, has an "any question
answered" call-in show about every two weeks at least once a month someone
calls in with the "-gry" question. You can hear the groans all around town
when it happens. One guy got hot when Mitchell told him the third word was
"gry," insisting that could not be. Go figure.
If someone's got a better answer, especially a really commong third "-gry,"
I'd love to hear it.
