Jason:
Basically, the general rule of thumb is the following: time spent in one
position
to earn a training award or key cannot be used to earn another training award or
key. For instance, I cannot use my time as a Scoutmaster to earn the Scouters'
Training Award. If, however, I am registered as a Scoutmaster AND as a District
Committeemember, I can work on both Scoutmasters's Key and District Committee
Key at the same time, following the training and coaching plan outlined for each
training award.
The Scoutmaster's training and coaching plan is unique (so far). EVERY
Scoutmaster
should strive at the 18 month point to earn the Scoutmaster Award of Merit.
This
"halfway point" provides a good boost for any Scoutmaster working on the
Scouters'
Key as a Scoutmaster. Likewise, ALL Commissioners should be striving to
earn the
Commissioners' Award of Merit at the end of five years of registered service and
after attaining the Arrowhead Honor Award, followed by the Commissioners' Key.
So, you cannot count the two years you spent working and earning the Scouters'
Training Award toward your three to five years' tenure as Scoutmaster. For
one,
you have to serve as SCOUTMASTER for at least three years; two, you have to
earn the SCOUTMASTER'S AWARD OF MERIT (which Assistants and others cannot
earn), and finally, you have to be the SCOUTMASTER of a Troop which has received
Quality unit (I think its two out of three years or all three years).
You cannot do any of those things to earn the Key as a Assistant nor as a
Committeemember or Chair.
The reference to all of this is found in the current edition of the
Leadership Development
booklet (someone help me out with the exact name...I've memorized what's in
it but can't
remember the name exactly....oh Mr. Postman, please bring me my
four-pounder notebook
(and don't get hurt doing it!!)!
