Alan makes a good point here. I taught Youth Protection at camp
this summer, and I made it a point to try and include the topic of the
internet.
The internet is an easy way for people to communicate with each
other. However, we can not tell what that person is like. I've had some
experiences with people from the "irc" here at school just showing up on my
doorstep, uninvited, and very strange. It was not a good feeling to know
that through the internet this person could find out where I live and
invade my privacy.
Alan's point is an excellent one--in a nutshell, don't give out to
much info, and don't open yourself up to others on the internet. It's a
great source for info and discussion; you just have to be careful what you
say and who you say it to.
My $.02 is this--if there is someone who is unfamiliar to you, and
they start to "harass" or "badger" your children, don't be afraid to go
to the police. They have officers that are trained to deal with these
situations.
