I personally am not really to happy with the new requirements
of no time limit. Some reasons is scouts rush thru the rank
earning the rank of eagle at age 13. Also the scouts are just
interested in thier next rank.
In my troop and at the summer i worked at, Lost Valley, most
of the scouts can earn frist class in one week (at a summer
camp) if all the prior camping nights etc has been done! i
know that there is some time involved with the troop events
req. But for the most part, in about a week of hard working
at a summer camp they can more or earn the badge of first
class at age 11-12. NExt comes star, sure now you have earn
merit badges, but where i live they are always having merit
badge days, scout nights, Orange County council has about
three of these merit badge days a year where scouts could
earn two merit badges. Then a year later they earn star and
they are up to being a Senior Patrol Leader at age
12-13..WOW.....Is this right? I know that the older boys
should always be in charge they should have more knowledge.
This might burn the scouts out, after they "earn" eagle at
age 15 they might not stay around for the other things
scouting has for the older boys, like Order of Arrow, etc...
Fast advancement can be good also, One reason is it keeps the
young scouts involved and the younger scouts feel that they
are really earning something.
Secondly, I have been told that if a scout makes first class
by like the first year he is in scouting, he chances of
staying in scouting increase. Sure it might increase till he
makes eagle at age 15 or something, but he will drop out when
he is older becuase he will have nothing to do. Sure there is
always palms, like what i did, i earned a few extra palms.
Skill awards, remember these nice looking belt loops. I
really liked these, I am still unsure why they took these out
of program but i think this is another way to boost the
scouts skills.
That's my thought for the day!
