As a Scoutmaster and Eagle Scout myself, I don't think I would approve a blood d
rive as an Eagle
project. Just last week, a scout from another troop in town ran a blood drive f
or his Eagle project to
great success, but another organization I belong to regularly runs blood drives
(3 times per year)
with equal or greater success. Ours are run by one blood drive chairman and abo
ut 5 other
volunteers.
Yes, I admit it takes a coordinated effort by several people under the guidance
of one person to
plan a successful drive, but I do not think the time required nor the manpower (
other than that
supplied by the Red Cross) comes near what is required for an Eagle project. Ca
ll the Red
Cross, make some posters, call the newspaper and radio stations, make phone call
s from a Red
Cross List, provide snacks, get a place to hold it and you've got a blood drive.
Maybe it comes
close to the 6 hours required for Star and Life but not Eagle. I don't consider
the duration of the
blood drive itself as counting toward the hours.
