"I only had one additional rule for the Boy's cars outside of the general
set. When I picked the car up to put on the track, I had to be able to
let go. Instituted the rule after one year when a car with wet paint was so
sticky that I had a hard time letting go." -- Opinion varies on this, but
I
feel, very strongly, that the ONLY PERSON qualified to race a car is the Cub
Scout who helped build it. In fact, our district race does not permit anyone
else, including track officials, to touch a boy's car from the time
inspection
finishes until racing is finished.
I won't bore you with war stories (unless you ask) on real and potential
abuses arising from handling of cars by track officials, but they are
miriad.
Those "war stories" boil down to "for the protection of the adults involved,
don't allow track officials to touch the cars during the racing."
"I was always thrilled when a car which obviously was done by the Cub
with little or no help won." -- PW Derby is promoted as a joint
youth/parent
activity, but I, too, revel in that irony!
